A good song can stir up the imagination, and when paired with a video as stunning as the one by Stella Hood for “Zinc” by Body Says No, it gets very exciting.

Hood, who lives in Germany. used stop motion animation processes and a computer to put together the frenetic and fun mini film. She explains: “It’s not analogue, but it was basically the same procedure. I searched for images, cut out every piece and animated frame by frame. It took a lot of time and effort because it’s very detailed and of course frame-by-frame is always extremely slow working. I used Photoshop for cutting out, Adobe Animate for the animation, and Premiere Pro for putting everything together.”

As innovative as Body Says No guitarist/vocalist Enej Mavsar is in music, it’s no surprise that he has a taste for the abstract in art. “Enej asked me to do this animation,” Hood says, “because he liked an animation I did December last year (‘The Nose That Ran Away’) and he wished also for a video in a similar style. So the only requirement was a cut-out stop motion animation that fits to the music.”

Because of the scale of Europe, it’s not unusual for artists to cross borders to collaborate. This is the case with creative meeting between the members of Slovenia’s Body Says No and Hood. “I met Enej during my voluntary service in Slovenia, in Krško. My project was in a small film production ‘Luksuz Producija’ and he helped us with sound and workshops…. I taught myself everything so I just keep practicing and learning new things with the help of the world wide web.”
