Noise Rock: Mr. Phylzzz And ‘Cancel Culture Club’

Mr Phylzzz With "Cancel Culture Club"Mr Phylzzz With "Cancel Culture Club"

By Keith Walsh
The new album by Mr Phylzzz, called Cancel Culture Club, deserves a review as intense as the music.

This album is DOPE! It’s as aggressive as you might expect from guitarist and vocalist Clinton Jacob, a veteran of comedy clubs. Add drummer Danny Sein to the mix and you get a powerful sound, with lots of fuzzed out electric guitar, pounding beats and socially informed vocals. This FREAKING AWESOME set was recorded in Chicago and features guest appearances by Buzz Osbourne of The Melvins, Kevin Rutmanis of The Melvins, Cows and Tomahawk, and Haze XXL.

Songs like “Pretend Friends” capture the angst of social life, while “Jesus With A Shaved Head” presents spirituality in a thoughtful new way. “In Memory Of A House Plant” rocks hard, while “Mr. Entertainer” tells a poignant tale, in melancholy fashion. It’s an intense 9 track set that features lots of hard guitar, killer drum beats and social commentary about the silliness of our lives. The hardness of the guitar dominates, in a mix that delivers intense sound that reminds me of 60s garage rock, 80s punk and 90s grunge.

This wall of sound is released on Amphetamine Reptile Records, and I can’t think of a more appropriately named label for this band. Check out this epic noise rock album and I hope to interview the guys soon!
